A Bahamian born in 1980, John Thompson has a passion for the natural world that was instilled at an early age by parents with marine science backgrounds. By the age of four, he was drawing the bird, fish and plant life of the Bahamas. At seven, he joined the Bahamas Horticultural Society, fostering a lifelong interest in plants. Frequent expeditions into the Bahamian 'bush', diving, and fishing provided a multitude of subjects, as he began illustrating the natural history of the islands.
Attending St. Andrews School in Nassau, John continued his pursuits in both the artistic and scientific fields. He was a devoted collector of everything around him from shells to palms, native trees and aquarium fish. Away at school at Tabor Academy in Massachusetts, he painted the botanicals series "Wetland Plants of Cape Cod" for the school's Marine Science Annex as well as Tufts University's "Tropical Marine Ecology Manual". During this time he recognized that he wanted to make a career out of his art, and had several small shows of Bahamian landscape canvases in Nassau and Eleuthera.
While at the University of Miami, John strengthened a relationship with the Bahamas National Trust, illustrating the "Ecosystems of the Bahamas" fact-sheets, the "Birds of the Bahamas" colouring book and a mangroves poster. He continued to sell his canvases on commission and began working on a large and ongoing series of Bahamian Botanicals.
John is currently working with The Danguillecourt Project on the book "Islands of the Sun" as well as a field guide to the flora and fauna of the northern Exuma Cays. His medium is primarily acrylics on canvas and paper, and his works hang in private collections throughout the Bahamas, the Caribbean and North America.
