EDUCATION
The Danguillecourt Project strives to provide educational activities promoting understanding and appreciation of the Bahamian environment . A key component is the Young Bahamian Marine Scientists (YBMS) programme.
Young Bahamian Marine Scientists aims to engage Bahamian youth in environmental stewardship by promoting an understanding of the marine sciences through scientific and artistic activities. YBMS programmes are provided at a minimal cost to each student so that everyone, regardless of ethnicity or class, can participate. Our goal is that all students involved in YBMS projects will be inspired to become active citizens concerned about environmental sustainability. The intent is to foster the development of the strong leaders needed to shape the future of the Bahamas

YBMS currently facilitates several educational activities. Our primary focus is an after-school program at C.V Bethel Senior High School in Nassau. In addition, w e have recently developed the SURGE program, a marine science leadership workshop for high school and college students, which explores Bahamian environmental topics integrated with a strong leadership-development curriculum. During the summer months, YBMS hosts summer camps throughout the islands of the Bahamas.

A long term goal for YBMS is develop our after-school program to include students from all high schools in New Providence, eventually expanding to the out islands. In the spring of 2011, YBMS plans to offer its first college credit field course in association with the University of Miami. A high priority is to be able to offer academic scholarships for students wanting to peruse tertiary education in the field of the environmental sciences.
